Carter's Hand Update

I took Carter to the burn clinic yesterday for his two week checkup. Good news! No skin graft as of right now. It doesn't mean that he won't need surgery in the future, but not now. The skin graft usually takes two to three weeks to heal and they think that his wounds will heal by them self in that same amount of time. So he wants to wait it out. If Carter wasn't such a good helper with his daily bandage changes and his physical therapy then the skin graft would be a definite.

The doctor is hoping that his ring finger doesn't have to much scar tissue and that he will have full mobility. He has two more appointments then he will be fitted for a glove that he will have to wear for the next six months to a year. This glove is used to keep the scarring to a minimum.

With going to the burn clinic each week and seeing all of the accidents that happen, I am just so thankful that Carter's finger's are healing so well. It breaks my heart to see all the kids in there with their burns.

I understand how you feel Shari. Aaron spent two months in the burn trauma unit at U OF U HOSP. following his accident. Then several skin grafts...it was so hard on him..You boy is in our prayers..take care of one another. I love you and your family.

Shari,
I am just so sorry you guys have to go through this with Carter! What can I do to help you guys? Can I help with your other boys when you need to go to the Doctor? A meal/s? A Slurpee? We'd love to help you guys in any way! I had no idea what happened until yesterday! I saw him on your blog and didn't have time to read on and see if you said what happened. I thought he just got a cut and you wrapped it up huge or something -- I didn't realize it was that serious...HOLY COW! I should have just inquired immediately! I've actually been down on my back for the last couple of days, I don't know how I hurt it, but it's getting better. So by next week I should be back (no pun intended) to normal, so I'd love to help you!

Sounds like you have a very brave boy. It always amazes me how strong and tolerant kids are, sometimes more so then us adults. Keep up posted for sure over the next few weeks on his progress.
